Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disease and a leading cause of death among children under the age of two; and one in forty Americans carry the gene that causes SMA

SMA causes degeneration in voluntary muscle movement, and symptoms included muscle weakness, poor muscle tone, weak cry, weak cough, limpness, difficulty sucking or swallowing, accumulation of secretions in the lungs or throat, a bell-shaped torso, clinched fists with sweaty hands, vibrating tongue, the head often tilted to one side, legs that tend to be weaker than arms, congenital contractures, susceptibility to respiratory infections, lower than normal weights, difficulty lifting the head and sitting up, and bowel/bladder weakness.
