Smile Senior Care wants you to stay warm on winter nights out.  Why not make one of these cute hats to keep you cozy?  You can even make matching hats for the whole family.

Chunky Beret Pattern

Knitting Needle Size: 4 or 3.5 mm, 8 or 5 mm, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

1 ball Lion Wool
4 & 8 DPNS
gauge: (taken in the round, in pattern)
body=4st/inch
ribbing=5st/inch unstretched

k2together 4 times, p1 *repeat for row
k2together 2 times, p1 *repeat for row
k2together, p1 *repeat for row
Cut a long tail, and thread it through the remaining stitches 3 times, weave the end inside the hat
Weave in the cast on tail.

For toque, make a two inch pompom, trim, and fasten.

You’re done!
Block lightly or leave it as is

*note, the ribbing is really tight, so if you have a bigger head, or hair with a lot of volume, go up a size or two for the smaller needles.

Waffle Hat

Knitting Needle Size: 8 or 5 mm, Circular Knitting Needles, Double-Pointed Knitting Needles (DPNs)

Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Gauge
22 stitches = 4″

Cast on 112 stitches on the circular needles.
Knit rib, K2, P2, over the 5 next rounds.
Knit the pattern like this over the next round:
Use an extra needle to work the pattern.
* Slip 6 stitches (2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches, 2 knit stitches) on to the extra needles. PLace the needle in front of your work. Wrap the yarn twice around (2×360 degrees) the six stitches. Tighten a bit, but not so much that you´ll make holes in your work. Knit the six stitches (K2, P2, K2).  P2. *. Repeat from * to * throughout the round.
Keep knitting like this:
Knit a rib, K2 , P2 over the 5 next rounds.
K2, P 2
(The new round will start here. Every time you are about to knit the round of pattern, you will start 4 stitches into the next round to make the waffel-stitch in the correct way)
Knit one full round in the pattern like before.

Continue until the work is 7″.

Start decreasing right after a round of the pattern. Switch to DP needles.
